Let’s have a look how a virtual production can reduce emissions.
The technical and operational impact of this technology, which dramatically reduces the need for a large crew footprint and eliminates the need for location work and travel, cannot be overstated.
A Virtual Production can consume about a third of the energy needed for a comparable offline rendered production. Therefore, Virtual Production can be considered a sustainable and also green shooting solution, especially if run on renewable energy. Furthermore, travel costs can be reduced as real sets can be digitized into virtual environments for LED volumes.
This is how we produced the campaign for the Volkswagen ID. Buzz. Using the most advanced media technology combined with interactive game engines, motion capture, camera tracking and high-end media servers, we were able to create virtual backgrounds, e.g. a coastal road or industrial area setting. It should be considered as a fantastic opportunity in times of need for environmental friendly and sustainable solutions.
How we did this?
CO₂ facts travel
If we had flown only to one of five created virtual locations e.g. to a coastal scenery in South Africa with a crew of 8 persons, we would have caused about
-> 15 tons of CO₂e for the roundtrip by plane.
With the train from Berlin to Munich to the Virtual Production Studio we used for the production, we reduced our travel emissions to
-> 400kg of CO₂e for the journey.
