Let’s have a look how remote shooting is bringing emissions down.

It is crucial to have in mind that if less crew members travel, less CO₂ emissions will be caused by the production.

Choosing a remote production approach helps to reduce the need for a large crew footprint.

Adversity can often provide an opportunity for emotive storytelling and bring creative work that feels compelling to fruition. The covid pandemic has felt intense in many ways for lots of sectors and individuals. Within the advertising industry, organizations had to get smarter, think outside the box and adapt to the changing world quickly. However, shooting remotely has been another story… and surprisingly enough, not all bad. Shooting an ad remotely can indeed contribute to lower CO₂emissions and offer several advantages in terms of environmental sustainability.

How we did this?

Whether to the Client, Agency, or even Director, live-streaming the footage with a video assist system allows the creative team to communicate with and give the production crew feedback. Using more tools for a remote workflow can lower emissions regarding air travel. Thus, pre-production meetings can be hold remote, as well as location reeces or cast rehearsals.

We shot in 12 different countries, our director was only in one. The local teams got briefed remotely, whether that be cast or crew. They received shooting guidelines and were briefed via video calls. A live-stream was set up while shooting in all locations. Each team was guided trough all phases of production. Even the post-production workflow took place remote in different countries. Editing took place in Berlin, color grading in Stockolm without flying once.

Overall, remote shooting reduces the carbon footprint by minimizing travel, energy consumption, resource wastage, and providing greater scheduling flexibility. By adopting remote shooting practices, companies can demonstrate their commitment to environmental sustainability and contribute to the global effort to mitigate climate change.

CO₂ facts travel

If 10 people (client and agency) fly to a pre-production meeting from London to Berlin, they cause about

-> 4,2 tons of CO₂e for roundtrip by plane.

If they use a remote video connection, they are able to reduce emissions to

-> 100kg of CO₂e for the electricity used for computers and office spaces.
